California Prop 65 Warning
Important Safety Information: California Proposition 65
To our valued customers,
You may see the following warning label on certain products, parts, or packaging that you purchase from us. This page is intended to help you understand what this warning means.
WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, phthalates, and carbon dust, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go towww.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
This warning is provided to comply with a California law known as Proposition 65.
What is California Proposition 65?
Proposition 65 is a California “right-to-know” law. Its official name is the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Its goal is to help Californians make informed decisions about their exposure to chemicals that the state has determined may cause cancer or reproductive harm. A warning does not necessarily mean that a product is unsafe or in violation of any product-safety standards.
You can learn more about the specifics of the law on the official California government website:
Why Do Our Power Tool Parts Carry This Warning?
Power tools and their replacement parts are complex items made from a variety of materials. To ensure full compliance with Proposition 65, we provide this warning. The chemicals referenced in the warning can be found in a wide range of common materials.
For power tool parts, exposure could potentially come from:
- Metals: Components made of brass or other alloys may contain small amounts of lead.
- Plastics and Rubber: Plastic housings, electrical cords, and rubber grips may contain phthalates.
- Electrical Components: Items like circuit boards and solder can contain lead and other listed chemicals.
- Dust and Abrasives: The use of power tools and accessories (like grinding wheels or sanding discs) can create dust from the materials being worked on. Wood dust, for example, is a chemical on the Prop 65 list. Similarly, the dust from carbon motor brushes wearing down during normal tool operation can also contain listed chemicals.
What This Warning Means For You
The presence of a Prop 65 warning does not mean a product is dangerous. The exposure standards set by Proposition 65 are often far more stringent than those set by federal agencies like the EPA or FDA. For many chemicals, the warning is required even if the exposure level is thousands of times lower than the level at which no observable harm has been seen.
We are confident that our products are safe when used as intended. This warning is our commitment to transparency and our effort to comply with California law.
